What is R2000 Method?
The R2000 method is a mode of construction/ maintenance that uses a combination of optimum labour force and equipment in a manner that is technically & economically feasible as well as  socially and environmentally responsible/sustainable.
The GoK with the assistance of some development partners started developed a new road mtce strategy in the early 1990’s with a “generic” name Roads 2000.
The R2000 strategy draws on the experiences of the Previous LB programmes (RARP & MRP)

Roll out of R2000 Method
R2000 method is rolled out through:
  • Creating productive employment opportunities on Road construction and maintenance of works
  • Providing technical skills training for staff of implementing agencies, small scale  entrepreneurs and project workers.
  • Mainstreaming of cross-cutting issues such as rights of workers, gender equality, protection of the environment and HIV&AIDS.
Roads 2000 Strategic Plan Targets
A five year National R2000 Strategy, covering 2005 -2010, was developed in 2004 with the following Targets:
  • Routine & holding mtce of 10.000 Km’s of PRs
  • Increasing Routine Mtce of un-PRs from 20.000 Kms’ to 37.000 Kms’ in plan period.
  • Spot Improvement of 18.000 Km of unpaved roads to maintainable standard.
  • Creation of 150,000 temporary jobs (35,000 full time), annually.
  • 1,250 active labour based contractors.
R2000 Programme Achievements
Currently several Roads 2000 programmes are being implemented in almost all provinces except in the North Eastern & Western Province(To Start in FY2010/2011) and some districts in Rift valley, Central, Eastern and Coast Provinces.
Significant progress has been made in the last five years in rolling out Roads 2000 programme nationwide with encouraging success stories.
